It's Been Awhile...

Lately, time has slipped by at an alarming rate. It's been weeks since I last promised a recap of the July NT submission period--but it only feels like a few days have passed.

I've been wondering if this temporal acceleration isn't a side effect of getting older. Time seems to scream by faster and faster with each passing year. Maybe someday, when I'm 75, I'll wake up one sunny morning in May to the smell of cut grass and by the time I crawl back into bed for the night, it'll be to the chill of December air and the smell of Christmas cookies.

Anyway, until I get the chance to offer some more in-depth thoughts, I'll simply say I couldn't be more thrilled with what we have on tap for our readers. You're in for a real treat with issue #13.

I learned a few things during this submission period that I hope to share with you soon. By that I mean before Halloween. I keed. I keed. But not really.

Until then, take care of each other.

  2. Doug,

Stephen King has a story about this very thing--time feeling like it goes by faster as you get older. Then slowing again. I think it's called My Pretty Pony. Your post made me think of it after all these years.

  3. Hi Jeremy--I'll give you #1 on my list right now: As difficult as it is for writers to accept rejection sometimes (and we've all been there), it's often just as difficult as an editor to send a rejection out for a story he/she thought was great, but just didn't quite fit the publication. I used to think "Your story is just not right for our magazine" was simply a kind way of saying "We didn't like your story but don't want to get into it." Since I had to reject many stories I loved but didn't feel were a good fit for NT, I've had to reconsider this belief. Makes things a bit more hopeful, I think.

Bobbie--Thanks for stopping by. I don't think I've read that one. Sounds interesting. I'll have to check it out.
