The Experience of a Lifetime

As I'm sure many of you have heard, horror magazine Necrotic Tissue will be closing up shop after issue #14.

Dammit.

Having said that, I'll always be grateful for the opportunities the magazine provided--not only to me, but to many, many other writers of horror and dark fiction. It was a huge part of my (still) budding career, and I'm proud to have been a part of it. This was one of the good ones, folks; a true leader in showcasing horror fiction at its best...no matter if it was from an industry veteran or a newbie hoping for his/her first sale.

I sold two stories to them--one of them being my first sale at pro-rates--before joining the editorial team, where I learned countless lessons about successful commercial fiction that I'll take with me in the years (decades, I hope) to come. Being on the other side of the editor's desk at a fantastic publication like NT was the experience of a lifetime. I'll miss reading the stories, providing feedback, and working with the team.

To Dan, Jodi and especially R. Scott McCoy: it's been a lot of fun. Thanks for everything.

  1. I hate to see good mags come to an end. This business is harder than hell!

I guess we do what we always do . . . dust off our thick skins until next time. :(

  2. It's brutal, and worse, unpredictable. That's why I've decided to spend the remainder of 2011 getting back to the basics--not worrying so much about the business side of things, and focusing much more intently upon my personal goals. Markets will come and go. Gigs will come and go. It's time to decide what's most important to me as a writer. I figure that's the only thing I can really control.
